Upon arrival in Glendalough, you’ll step back in time as your guide leads you through the historic Monastic City, founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century. This site became one of the most important religious centers in Ireland during the Early Christian period. The walking tour (included at no extra charge!) will focus on the incredible ruins that mark the area's rich history.
Key highlights include:
- Round Tower: This 30-meter-high tower, one of the tallest of its kind in Ireland, was used as both a bell tower and a place of refuge for monks during Viking raids. It’s an iconic symbol of Glendalough and the resilience of the monks who sought shelter here.
- St. Kevin’s Church: The church is believed to be the site where St. Kevin lived and prayed. The ruins include remnants of the original stonework, and it offers a glimpse into the early Christian architectural style.
- The Cathedral: The remains of this large cathedral provide insight into Glendalough’s status as a major monastic settlement. Next, you’ll travel to Hollywood, a small village in the heart of Wicklow, known for its connection to traditional farming life. Here, you’ll experience a 45-minute sheepdog demonstration at Irish Working Sheepdogs (entrance fee included!). This hands-on experience showcases the incredible skills of border collies as they herd sheep, guided by their skilled handler.
During the demonstration, the local sheep farmer will share the fascinating history of Hollywood, Co. Wicklow, and explain how Hollywood in California came to share the same name. Guests are also invited to borrow the farmer's binoculars to view the Hollywood sign in the hills above the farm, offering a unique chance to see the iconic sign in a rural Irish setting.

15:15: Arrive in Kilkenny - Medieval Mile Walking Tour
Kilkenny, often called the "Marble City," is a medieval city known for its rich history and stunning architecture. The city was founded by the Normans after their invasion of Ireland in the 1100s, and it flourished under their rule. Kilkenny became a center of Norman power and culture, with the construction of significant landmarks such as Kilkenny Castle, which stands as a reminder of the city’s role as a stronghold of the Anglo-Norman lords. Today, Kilkenny is a vibrant mix of medieval heritage and modern life, with charming streets, pubs, and historical sites to explore.
Your driver will drop you off at St. Canice’s Cathedral, one of the oldest and most beautiful structures in the city. After exploring the cathedral, your guide will take you on a 30-minute walking tour (included at no extra charge!) through Kilkenny’s medieval streets, where you’ll see:
- St. Canice’s Cathedral: Dating back to the 13th century, this cathedral is a fine example of early Gothic architecture. The tower offers panoramic views of the city, and you can even climb to the top for a stunning vista.
- Medieval Mile: The walking tour will pass through the Medieval Mile, a stretch of narrow cobblestone streets lined with historical buildings, including Rothe House, a Tudor mansion and museum.

After the walking tour, enjoy 2 hours of leisure time to explore Kilkenny’s charming streets. Popular places to visit include:
- Kilkenny Castle Park: Wander through the castle grounds, where you can enjoy the formal gardens, the picturesque lake, and the peaceful woodland.
- Smithwick’s Brewery: Visit the birthplace of Smithwick’s, one of Ireland’s oldest ales, and take a tour of the brewery, followed by a tasting.
- Traditional Pubs and Restaurants: Kilkenny is famous for its welcoming pubs. Consider stopping at Kyteler’s Inn, a 14th-century pub with a dark but fascinating history. Alice Kyteler, the original owner, was accused of witchcraft in the 14th century, making this a place full of intrigue and folklore. You can also visit Cleere’s, a popular and lively spot, known for its cozy atmosphere and traditional Irish food and drinks. For a unique Kilkenny experience, also consider visiting The Hole in the Wall, a historic pub that has traded since 1560. On the way back to Dublin, you’ll pass through County Kildare, known for its world-class racehorse breeding and training. The flat plains of the Curragh are home to some of Ireland’s most renowned stud farms and training grounds. Historically, this area also served as a British military garrison during Ireland’s occupation. Today, the headquarters of the 1st Infantry Brigade of the Irish Army is located at Curragh Camp, a military base that remains in use for operations and training. Your tour will follow the river Liffey into the heart of Dublin, past the historic Guinness Brewery, Four Courts and Temple Bar district. You'll be back downtown for 19:30 in time for refreshments, dinner and rest.
